"Hugo can continue working with the national team, but in a different role," the source said, adding: "We have received several applications for the head coach position, and Pitso Mosimane is one of the candidates."
Broos confirmed his departure in an interview with Belgian magazine Humo, revealing that South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan wants him to remain with the national team "in another role, as a consultant or something similar."
Under Broos, South Africa reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time, finishing second in their group behind Mexico after defeating South Korea 1-0. Their campaign ended in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 defeat to Canada.
Broos, who took charge in 2021, also guided Bafana Bafana to a third-place finish at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
Former South Africa coach Pitso Mosimane is among the leading candidates to succeed him. Mosimane previously managed the national team from 2010 to 2012 before enjoying successful spells with Mamelodi Sundowns and Egypt's Al Ahly, where he won the CAF Champions League three times.
