Stellenbosch FC sign former Chiefs midfielder

Stellenbosch FC have completed the signing of former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou on a free transfer, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

The club did not reveal the length of Matlou’s stay, saying only that it was a “long-term contract”.

“George is a player we believe can add real value to our squad through his experience, technical ability and understanding of the game,” Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie said.

“His pedigree speaks for itself, and we are naturally pleased that he has chosen to continue his career with Stellenbosch FC. We believe he can play an important role in helping us achieve our objectives this season.”

Matlou came through the academy at Bidvest Wits and had loan stints at second-tier sides Cape Town All Stars and Cape Umoya United.

He then spent two years in Portugal with lower-league side Sanjoanense before joining Moroka Swallows for the 2021/22 campaign.

He signed for Chiefs the following season and made 46 appearances for Amakhosi, helping them win the 2025 Nedbank Cup.
